En el Día Internacional de la enfermedad de Alzheimer, y a pocos días de que se celebre el Día Internacional de las personas mayores, queremos dedicarles nuestro trabajo a estas personas. Porque nuestro juguetes de madera Montessori y Waldorf, al igual que estas pedagogías alternativas, son muy beneficiosos para su desarrollo y su calidad de vida. A continuación os contamos por qué.
NUESTROS JUGUETES EDUCATIVOS NO SON SOLO PARA NIÑOS: ¡SON IDEALES PARA NUESTROS MAYORES TAMBIÉN!
Hoy se celebra el Día Mundial del Alzheimer y el 1 de octubre estaremos ante el Día Mundial de las personas mayores. Y en Habitar las Formas no queremos dejar pasar la oportunidad de rendir un pequeño tributo a esos colectivos vulnerables de nuestra sociedad que significan tanto para nosotros. En realidad, con cada juguete y juegos educativos que construimos los tenemos presentes. Y es que sabemos que los juguetes de madera Montessori también se utilizan para trabajar con personas mayores y personas con demencia.
Quizás muchos de vosotros no lo sepáis, pero los juguetes pedagógicos —y, especialmente, todos los materiales Montessori— se emplean en diversos talleres gerontológicos y de estimulación cognitiva. De hecho, cada vez está más en boga aplicar el Método Montessori en centros para mayores y personas enfermas de Alzheimer y otras demencias. Principalmente, en aquellos centros que promueven un modelo de atención centrado en la persona. Donde se respeta el ritmo de aprendizaje y se fomenta la autonomía de los mayores.
En efecto, el método de aprendizaje Montessori, aunque fue ideado para promover el desarrollo natural de los más pequeños, resulta muy valioso para los adultos mayores. Puesto que los principios que lo rigen pueden extrapolarse perfectamente al colectivo de la tercera edad y las personas afectadas por el deterioro cognitivo.
Recordemos que el modelo educativo Montessori defiende que niños y niñas desarrollen sus habilidades de forma autónoma. Ayudados, eso sí, por juegos o materiales didácticos especializados que inspiren el juego simbólico y libre. A su vez, los juguetes de madera o juegos Montessori refuerzan los estímulos sensoriales y el desarrollo cognitivo de los niños. Aspectos que también precisan ejercitar las personas de edad avanzada y las que sufren deterioro cognitivo.

BENEFICIOS DE LOS JUGUETES DE MADERA MONTESSORI PARA LAS PERSONAS MAYORES
Los talleres o actividades en los que se emplean los juguetes de madera Montessori suelen denominarse Terapia Montessori. Se trata de un tipo de terapia no farmacológica, vinculada a la terapia ocupacional, cuya finalidad es diversa. Entre otros motivos, se usan para estimular las capacidades cognitivas y sensoriales; ejercitar la psicomotricidad fina y reforzar la autonomía personal en la realización de las actividades de la vida diaria.
Pero el método Montessori, su filosofía, va mucho más allá. Se trata de infundir al mayor —o al niño— libertad de movimiento y confianza en su propia capacidad de decisión y control de los errores. Este auténtico respeto por la individualidad, la independencia, la autoeficiencia y la dignidad de cada usuario de la metodología Montessori fortalece su empoderamiento y su autoestima.
En resumen, el método diseñado por la doctora y pedagoga Maria Montessori busca extraer el máximo de potencial de la persona mayor; al igual que lo hace con los más pequeños. En efecto, si hablamos de personas ancianas o con enfermedades neurodegenerativas, mediante esta terapia se logra motivar su desarrollo integral. Pues, a través de las actividades y los materiales naturales Montessori, se estimulan sus habilidades funcionales, mentales, cognitivas y emocionales al mismo tiempo.
Generalmente, podéis ver los juegos de piezas de madera en las manos de personas mayores con demencia, ya que les aportan muchísimo bienestar y calidad de vida. Pues, a la par que sirven para retrasar el deterioro cognitivo que padecen, aumentan su autoestima y calman sus conductas erráticas o agresivas.
Los materiales o juguetes Montessori inspiran al juego libre y la participación activa de la persona mayor, dejándola actuar con libertad. Asimismo potencian sus capacidades aún conservadas y su dignidad, a través de una terapia dinámica y flexible, que se adapta a sus necesidades y voluntad.
JUGUETES MONTESSORI Y WALDORF PARA REGALAR A PERSONAS MAYORES O CON DEMENCIA
Así pues, a los pequeños, los juguetes de madera pedagógicos les sirven para aprender e impulsar su desarrollo evolutivo integral. Mientras que a los adultos mayores les permiten ejercitar las habilidades funcionales que ya poseen, para que las mantengan en las mejores condiciones posibles. En ambos casos, dicho aprendizaje o reeducación lo consiguen de un modo lúdico y creativo. ¡Como veis, el poder y la utilidad de estos juguetes son impresionantes!
No obstante, debemos hacer una aclaración. Aunque hablemos de juguetes de madera Montessori, cabe incluir también muchos juguetes vinculados a la pedagogía Waldorf. Como, por ejemplo, nuestro querido Arco Iris, cuya funcionalidad otorga los mismos beneficios educativos o terapéuticos de muchos juguetes Montessori.
Sucede que no existe un método Waldorf aplicado a las terapias ocupacionales gerontológicas, de ahí que no se los mencione tanto. Pero, insistimos, muchos juegos y especialmente el Arco Iris Waldorf resultan fenomenales para trabajar con personas de edad avanzada o con demencia.
Por consiguiente, tanto con los juegos Waldorf como Montessori conseguiremos prevenir o retrasar el avance del deterioro cognitivo. De la misma manera que podremos ejercitar o mejorar las capacidades funcionales de nuestros ancianos o enfermos.
ALGUNOS DE NUESTROS JUGUETES PEDAGÓGICOS Y TERAPÉUTICOS
Los juegos de construcción o apilables o juegos como el abecedario Montessori, por ejemplo, resultan fantásticos para ejercitar la estimulación de las funciones cognitivas superiores. Nos referimos a la memoria, atención, funciones ejecutivas, estimulación sensorial. Al tiempo que favorecen el ejercicio de las capacidades físicas, psicomotrices y, si se desarrollan en grupo, las habilidades sociales.
Beneficios similares obtenemos de incitar a los mayores a crear mini mundos con los juguetes de madera, como nuestras Nanis, Casitas orgánicas, Arboreda Nova, etc. Ya que fortalece su pensamiento lógico, las orientación espacial y la concentración.
Por otro lado, en un post anterior, os recomendamos cinco juguetes ideales para reforzar la psicomotricidad y otras funciones cognitivas y motrices. Pues bien, algunos de esos juguetes, como los diversos Arco Iris Waldorf —sobre todo el Arco iris sensorial—, pueden resultar apropiados para trabajar con mayores. Así como las Dovelas, los semicírculos o tablas arcoiris, la Torre Rosa o la Escalera Montessori también son geniales para realizar actividades terapéuticas atractivas con nuestros mayores.
Pero además, con estos juegos se promueve la iniciativa y la autogestión de los mayores, ya que se adaptan a sus capacidades y su ritmo. Y, algo sumamente importante: permiten realizar actividades divertidas y significativas para la persona mayor. Especialmente si las comparte con otros miembros de la familia, como sus nietos.
Sin duda, utilizar juguetes de madera Montessori les da la oportunidad de interactuar de forma satisfactoria con el entorno físico y social. De ahí que sean un recurso tan valioso para fomentar su bienestar y motivarles a vivir un envejecimiento activo hasta el final.
Por eso, os animamos a regalar a vuestros mayores o familiares enfermos de Alzheimer u otra demencia este tipo de juguetes Montessori o Waldorf.
APOYANDO AL ENVEJECIMIENTO SALUDABLE CON NUESTROS JUEGOS DE MADERA
Quizá lo más destacado del método Montessori aplicado a la tercera edad es que se considera una intervención terapéutica no farmacológica. Y como tal, sus actividades lúdicas y educativas proporcionan el desarrollo personal y emocional que realmente necesitan experimentar los mayores. Especialmente, si se ven tristemente afectados por una enfermedad neurodegenerativa como es el Alzheimer.
En un día tan señalado tanto para las personas enfermas de Alzheimer y otras demencias como para sus familiares cuidadores; quisimos ceder el protagonismo a nuestros mayores. Esos abuelos, padres o madres que compartieron tantos juegos con nosotros. Que tantos juguetes de madera arsenales nos regalaron cuando éramos niños. Y que tanto nos necesitan ahora, conforme entran en la etapa de la vejez o su memoria se diluye en el olvido más funesto.
Sin duda, nuestros mayores son uno de los motivos por los que somos carpinteros artesanales y construimos nuestros juguetes de madera ecológicos, sensoriales, terapéuticos y coloridos. De alguna manera, queremos devolverles parte de toda la ilusión, diversión, enseñanza y cuidados que nos prodigaron en nuestra infancia. Y obviamente continuar manteniendo vivas esas infancias lúdicas y sensoriales. Por eso nos preocuparnos por que los niños actuales crezcan al calor de unos juguetes de madera pedagógicos que les permitan explotar todo su potencial creativo único.
